We%26#039;re seeing all these people providing free web hosting right now, like for example FREEWEBS or BLOGGER (Blogspot). With these free services you can set up your own website and manage it. But when you sign up for these free services, there%26#039;s an itsy bitsy problem - you%26#039;re URL isn%26#039;t completely unique.

For example, in Freewebs, you will get your website%26#039;s URL as www.freewebs.com/yournamehere (example only). And in Blogger, it%26#039;s www.yournamehere.blogspot.com.

Is there any totally free web hosting service that allows your url to be just www.yournamehere.com??

Usually, when you%26#039;re given a domain name and webspace, you will have to configure your webspace to respond to those accessing the domain name. Some webspace provider have its own control panel (cPanel, Plesk, Virtuozzo, etc) that will allow you to defined the domain name to direct traffic to your webspace.

In some cases, when you were given the webspace and the domain name, it%26#039;s already linked.

Check with your service provider customer support for documentation on how to configure your domain name to work with your webspace.

the paths to the images isn%26#039;t correct.

The best way to link images (or other pages) in your site is by relative links as opposed to absolute links.

An absolute link is like %26quot;http://www.mysite.com/images/photo.jpg%26quot;

example: you have your index.html and your images in a folder called %26quot;images%26quot;

the directory where the index.html is your %26quot;root%26quot; directory. So the images directory would be /images.

In the index I want to link to a photo. %26lt;img src=%26quot;images/photo.jpg%26quot; ..... %26gt;

if I had another page %26quot;news.html%26quot; in the diretcory /news (for instance) and I wanted to put a link back to the index page the link would be %26lt;a href=%26quot;../index.html%26gt;index%26lt;/a%26gt;

../ means %26quot;up one level%26quot;

Now with that in mind if I had a photo on the page %26quot;news.html%26quot; that%26#039;s in the /images directory then the link would be %26quot;../images/photo.jpg%26quot;

It may be possible (maybe) that if you were using a HTML editor to build the page(s) the editor may have linked the images absolutely on your pc. Instead of %26quot;images/photo.jpg%26quot; it may have done %26quot;file://C:/Documents%20and%20Settings...... (and so-on)%26quot;

I have never seen a web hosting company cheaper than 1 dollar per month. I think you should be careful though, notice how one thing that isn%26#039;t on that list is any kind of customer service?

If you have a problem, you will be out of luck. Go with godaddy or something that costs a few dollars more. I like godaddy because there is always someone you can call if you need help with anything, and they speak english.

Not that i know of but that kind of price sounds pretty shady. That%26#039;s TOO cheap. too cheap to even cover the visa transaction to make that payment.

Due to demand, I am beginning to design web pages among other things for my small graphic design company. Clients are pleased with the design on a CD, but are requesting that I actually get the page to their chosen domain, or help them with the process. I am not sure how to go about this. I have looked into Yahoo web hosting, but it seems that you have to create from their template. I am using an art software that publishes the website to pdf. You have to upload your files on your websites, and that space for your files is included in the hosting plan that you purchase. There are lots of FTP client software which you can use to upload your files. Just ask your web host the FTP address, host name, and directory.

Most of the hosts now also include in their package a file manager on their control panel. That means, you can upload your files through your web hosting account%26#039;s control panel. Again, ask your webhost if tehy have file manager option.

And lastly, you can use your browser to upload your files. I personally prefer Internet Explorer (although I%26#039;m a mozilla user) among the browsers in uploading my files because in uploading my files, I only have to copy the files form my computer and %26quot;paste%26quot; in in my virtual folder (same as copying a file from one folder to another in my computer).

Generally your internet provider allows you webhosting with your service, you just need an FTP program to access it. Get in touch with your internet provider and then do a search for a free FTP software (I use CORE FTP Lite for free). You can also create your own domain name and have it forwarded to your internet-space (I use #1 Cheap Domains)

Well It depends on what he wants you to buy. If it is dreamweaver, it would make your edits simple, and that is probably why he wants you to buy it. However if you did not agree on buying software, you should not have to. They should give you the design and then if you would like to purchase additional services you may do so. If you want to hand edit html in textpad, and send it via FTP then that is your choice. YOu paid him for a design, and that is all should get. Also the slideshow is probably a copy and paste job. It depends on the implementation. So that may be debatable too.

Well I am not sure about the legallity of the issue, but if you have made a contract where he is ONLY supposed to make a website for you and then he is ONLY supposed to show you how to maintain it yourself (which is only FTP as you say) then I don%26#039;t think you need to purchase those two software programs.

About the slideshow, if he gave a quote and you accepted the quote, he is not at fault. However, if he proceeded without informing you, you can refuse to take delivery of that portion and not pay for it.

Other Replys:The DOC type is placed at the top of your file (html, xhtml, css, etc) it is used to tell the browser what type of data follows.

There are DOC types for different code types and to specify if it is strict or transitional etc.

If a DOC type is NOT specified then the browser will try to display it as standard HTML BUT a validation checker usually requires it to be able to check your code properly.

If the browser displays the page correctly then there is no problem in using the file as is BUT I would check your page with other browsers as well. IE does not always follow strict web guidelines and although your page displays nicely in IE it may not with other browsers and as a lot of people prefer to use something other than IE then you should make sure your code is correct. Try firefox as this is a very popular one and does follow web guidelines.

A lot of web design software will automatically add the DOC line to your code for you but as you are using notepad then you will have to do it manually.

I also commend you for learning HTML properly and using notepad will mean you don%26#039;t learn any bad habbits but I do sugest you download and use a web design package to make life easier. There are a lot of free ones and 2 I can recommend are:-

Will google un-penalize me at some point for what my hosting/marketing company did?

My website is 2 weeks old, and I have enjoyed being the 3rd %26#039;hit%26#039; on google uk for a particular (and very relevant!) search term. This has gone from position no. 3 to no. 781, a couple of days ago. My web hosting company submitted a ranking progress report twice within a week, because I upgraded my marketing package within this week, and they automatically do another one with each package. Google don%26#039;t like people (I didn%26#039;t even do it myself!) submitting ranking reports more than once a month, and seem to have responded to this by jettisoning me off the 3rd spot to the 781st for my keyword. Will they %26#039;un-penalize%26#039; me or will this position damage be permanent?
